Founded in 1974, by Mr. Ewan Cheung, our company from the very beginning has always been associated with innovative ideas and quality design. Mr. Cheung started his career in fireworks in 1962. China, at this time, mainly manufactured firecrackers for domestic use. Altough some firecrackers were exported to Europe, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Hong Kong, the quantity was not large. Since the United States did not have a trade agreement with China, firecrackers were mainly supplied to the US by Macao, where production was a top industry. Realizing the potential for a large export market, Mr. Cheung traveled to Japan in 1963 and introduced various types of Chinese firecracklers to the Japanese market. At the same time he began importing Japanese product into the Hong Kong area. During this period of time, Japan was one of the biggest manufacturers and exporters of fireworks including both consumer and display pyrotechnics. With new types of fireworks nowbeing introduced to the Chinese market from Japan, gradually the Chinese factories learned the technique of making different types of items such as roman candles, bottle rockets, fountains, and small aerial devices. Along with the use of various colors. China started to produce and export fireworks in addition to its traditional firecrackers. In 1965, Singapore and Malaysia lifted its ban on firecrackers. Overseas suppliers in these countries began the import of Chinese firecrackers and the export volume of firecrackers from China jumped several times. Two years later, Indonesia also opened its market to Chinese firecrackers, further increasing demand. Sadly, due to misuse and accidents, firecrackers and fireworks were again graduslly banned in these countries around 1970. However the stage was now set for the Chinese firework industry to explode onto the foreign market place in full force. In Europe, Japan, Australia and especially the United State where trade between the US and China had reopened due to President Nixon, the demand for Chinese made fireworks was about to take off. Mr. Cheung quickly took advantage of the new trade agreement and became the first person to sell and ship Chinese fireworks to the US since 1949. Sensing a fast growing business opportunity, in 1974 mr. Cheung formed his own company as we know it today and shortly thereafter Mr. Joe Wan was brought on to help run the rapidly expanding operation. At that time, all Chinese firework factories and export corporations were state owned and the supply of fireworks went through a preset channel. The head corporation in Beijing controlled the price policies of all export corporation in each province and only a few of these were allowed to handle fireworks, such as Guangdong (Horse & Tiger-head brand), Hunan and jiangxi (Red Lantern), Guangxi (Link Triad), Beijing City and Shanxi (Temple of Heaven), Zheijang (West Lake), Jiangxi (Flower Basket) and Shanxi (Wu Tai Mountain). Each corporation would sell the same type of items, for example Air Travel and Moon Travel bottle rockets, at the same price. Normally the price would be adjusted each year on New Year's Day and in practice, there was no negotiation of the price. The system started to change around 1987 when the Chinese Government allowed more freedom in business activities and the head corporation started to lose control over the provincial corporations. Private companies in China were allowed to do business with individual factories and price competition emerged. Mr. Cheung noticed that there was market for high quality fireworks and he applied to set up joint venture firework factories in Guangdong. All joint venture partners from outside of China had to get permission first, and in 1992 and 1993, we built our first two factories in Guangdong. One produced machine pressed rockets and the other Vulcan brand display shells. We were the first company in Hong Kong to set up our own firework factories in China. We also pioneered, a few years later, our own paper tube factory to prodece high quality machine rolled tubes using machines from Taiwan and Germany. Due to limited production capacity, we first targeted the European market and when the high quality fireworks were well received, we set up another base in Hunan in 1993 and built more factories in Liuyang. In 1998, mainly for the US consumer market, we created the Shogun brand, which has become one of the most highly popular brands, known for top quality performance, innovative packaging and exciting graphic design. For display fireworks, our Vulcan brand was created and has become increasing well known for its high quality ball and cylinder shells, roman candles, rockets, and many othe European style firework items. In 1999, we partnered with the Onda Company of Japan to set up our Yoshihede factory in Hunan to produce Japanese style display shells under the Shogun brand label. Finally, in 2002, we partnered with the Haga family of Japan to produce our Haga brand display shells. All of this brands are produced in different styles and price ranges to suit a variety of customers' needs. In the past 15 years, we have expanded our business in China to include branch offices in Foshan, Jiangmen, Liuyang and Beihai along with our main office in Hong Kong. We now have a total of twelve factories in Guangdong, Hunan and Guangxi provinces. In addition, there are about forty factories working closely with us to help produce all our hundreds of firework items. Since starting our own factories to produce fireworks of the highest standards, we have truly created a new direction in the firework industry and led the way for other factories to follow. We have some of the most modern facilities and equipment in China today along with an experienced and dedicated workforce. We continue to strive to be the market leader in fireworks, producing top quality pyrotechnics and creating original and innovative firework products year after year.
